Prof. Datuk Dr. Awang Bin Sariyan

Since July 1 2019, Prof. Datuk Dr. Awang Sariyan was appointed as Chair Holder, Institute of Malay Civilization, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris. His previous post was Professor of Malay Civilization Study, International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), International Islamic University Malaysia, General Director of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka 10th, twice as Professor Chair of Malay Studies Government in the People’s Republic of China, Professor of Language at Universiti Putra Malaysia and Professor of Languages ​​at the University of Malaya.

In addition, he has been a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brunei Darussalam, a Visiting Professor at the University of Frankfurt, Germany and the University of North Sumatra, Indonesia.

He has been awarded an Honorary Professor of Language and Cultural Education by Beijing Foreign Studies University and an honorary Doctorate by the World Academy of Arts, USA. Singapore’s Ministry of Education appointed him for over 10 years as a Overseas Consultant in Malay language education.

Sultan Zainal Abidin University (UNISZA), has appointed him as ‘Karyawan Ulung’ (2019-2021). Minister of Education appointed him as a member of the The Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) and member of the Jawatankuasa Tetap Bahasa Melayu (JKTBM).

His works include over 50 titles in scholarly books, general books, textbooks, dictionaries and poetry books and over a thousand of papers. He published the papers in the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP Malaysia), Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP Brunei Darussalsm), Journal of Linguistics (Linguistic Association of Malaysia), Journal of Thinkers (Utusan Melayu), Journal of Malay Studies (University of Malaya), Journal Melayu (Malaysia), Journal of Translators (Association of Translators of Malaysia), Journal of African and African Studies, Academy of Social Science Beijing) and in various magazines and newspapers (Community Hall, Literature, Cultural Council, Islamic Civilization Council, Language Learners, Student Council, Mastics, Dian , Daily News, Utusan Malaysia, Harakah et al.).

Over 200 lectures, keynote addresses and papers have been delivered in Malaysia and other countries (Australia, Netherlands, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Germany, South Korea, France, People’s Republic of China, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and United Kingdom).

He has been appointed as external examiner of PhD thesis and scholars from several universities, including from Singapore.

He was conferred the Honorary Commander-in-Chief of the State, Datuk from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Honorary Secretary-General of the State, Dato’ from the President of Penang.

In the association, he was the President of the Malaysia Linguistic Association, consultant Malay Consultative Council (MPM), a member of the generator set of Kumpulan Prihatin, Vice Chairman and members of the Alumni Lembah Pantai Malaysia National Writers Association.
